Ruel Foundation's Mission

To bring healing, love, hope and a better future to children in crisis

We provide short and long-term care to infants and children who have been orphaned, abused or abandoned, or where their health and life expectancy are in serious jeopardy. These are situations where their families, due to circumstances of poverty or other cultural factors, are unable to provide for them.

What We Do

1) Rescuing Children

We provide children in crisis, who are orphaned, abused or abandoned, with a loving, safe home and education.

Ruel Foundation has three Children’s Homes in the Philippines: Calapan City, Romblon and Sorsogon.

At each of these homes we accept children in crisis – children who have either been abandoned, abused, neglected, orphaned or severely malnourished.

Each of our children have their own unique story; they come to us beautifully broken. Through love and care they are made whole again; prepared to be reunited with their extended family or start a new life with their ‘forever family’.

Each of Our
Children's Homes Provide:

  • A Loving, Caring Home
  • Education
  • Medical Intervention
  • Psychological Help
  • Good Nutrition
  • Spiritual Guidance
  • Safety

2) Surgeries

Ruel provides cleft lip, cleft palate & other life changing surgeries for children in desperate need.

Most of the children that we accept for surgery either have a cleft lip and/or cleft palate.

A cleft lip or cleft palate has a profound effect on a child’s life. They cannot drink or eat properly which leads to illness and malnutrition, and in some cases death. They cannot go to school as they are ridiculed, so they lead a life of shame and rejection.

A cleft lip and cleft palate can be surgically corrected.
A local Filipino child Ruel was the first child to receive a life changing surgery from a Ruel sponsored surgery, and it was through him that the Ruel Foundation was born!

What's Involved in a Child's Surgery?

A child’s surgery involves much more than just the procedure itself. There are numerous steps taken before and after the surgery to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Pre-Surgery Preparation:

Ruel Foundation first seeks permission from local governments and social agencies in various regions to conduct the surgeries.

Ruel then launches an advertising campaign to inform families about the upcoming surgical outreach.

Surgical Process:

Each procedure involves three key meetings with the patients and their support person:

1. Pre-operation checkup
2. The actual operation
3. Post-operation checkup and suture removal

Thanks to our partnership with Smile Train, Ruel Foundation can provide these operations at no cost to the patients.

3) Community Outreach

Ruel Foundation provides food parcels and emergency relief to poverty-stricken tribal areas, and assists in natural disasters.

In 2005 we saw a dire need within the Mangyan community and felt compelled to help.

The Mangyan tribal people are incredibly poor, earning as little as $8 a day. With an average of four children per family, many children are severely malnourished because their families are unable to feed them but with the help of donors Ruel can provide food parcels for families, providing them with nutritional food.

Ruel also seek to identify children who would benefit by coming to the Ruel Malnourished Center in Calapan. Here they go through our re-feeding program and in six months they return to their families happy and very healthy.

Depending on support, Ruel Foundation aim to do 5 community outreach programmes per year.

4) Volunteer

We welcome volunteers both short & long term. Be involved in childcare, maintenance or admin – we need you!

Ruel Foundation welcomes short and long term volunteers from around the globe. From childcare, building maintenance, music and teaching, there are so many ways that will help make a difference.

Volunteering at Ruel Foundation

We have volunteer opportunities at each of our three bases.

Volunteers need to be 18yrs old unless accompanied by a parent. Because we are a charitable organisation there is a cost to volunteering, depending on your length of stay and base.

Short term trips start at a minimum of one week, right up to long term stays of months or years. We accept both individuals and teams and will either be accommodated onsite or offsite depending on the Children’s Home.

After an initial application, our full information pack will be emailed to applicants.

By reaching out to others, volunteers often come away changed themselves!

Ruel Experiences

Volunteering at Ruel

My initial intention was to go help others; in the end, I believe I am the one who was helped the most. I have become a new person. I see the world through a new set of eyes and feel with a different part of my heart.

I have already begun to plan for my return trip to Ruel in a couple of years. It’s an amazing journey and truly transformative. We are all called to be the hands and feet of the Lord. If you feel that this is your calling, you will find a place at Ruel.”
